Kristi knows the power of entrepreneurship for women and girls, so she is thrilled to support Malena and her two sisters’ business REciarte. They have taken their challenge of living amongst the garbage dump and turned it into an opportunity: a bolsa made from chip bags. In the trendy world, it’s called Upcycling.
The idea of helping REciarte sell the bolsas in the United States came out of desperation. In February 2015, Kristi asked Malena, “What question do you have for me?” Her reply, “How can you help me sell the bolsas.” In July, Kristi returned to visit the sisters and purchase more bolsas and found out that the question did not come out of refined marketing but desperation. Malena’s sister Marta was in the hospital, and they had no money to help her. The money the women have earned from the sale of the bolsas has transformed their lives: Marta is able to afford the medicine for her lung condition, Maria is able to send her daughter to 9th grade, and Malena told Kristi that her hands and feet have been hurting lately, and she was going to the doctor with the money.
When you buy a bolsa, you are part of the social enterprise model; your awesome bolsa not only is trendy and functional, it supports these three sisters, their families, and their community. You are part of the Girl Effect and AWE’s unique Upcycling of powerful women.
Because each bolsa is unique, your bolsa might vary slightly from the one pictured. We will do our best to choose a bolsa in the color scheme of your choice!
